The Wachowski brothers – creators of the Matrix Trilogy – are back on track with a great movie: V for Vendetta. In an attempt to raise awareness around current political issues and give a rebirth to the Vox populi whole concept that seems to be lost…
It is the kind of movies to create a huge buzz around it and a big controversy among the Pros and Cons of the strong message it delivers: “people shouldn’t be afraid of their governments, governments should be afraid of their people”
V for Vendetta takes place in a futuristic England ruled by a High Chancellor ultra conservator and ultra nationalist… a country where all personal freedoms have been lost, where the government decides every little detail in the life of its people.
Books have been burnt, all Art expressions destroyed and banned while a strong iron fist controls any cultural expression, even laughter. No need for all that as long as you have the State religion, the high chancellor and “England prevails” to guide you…
The “different people” disappeared: Other religions, gays, lesbians, intellectuals as well as people with a different opinion…
Does this panorama ring any bells!!???
Yeah you got it, it is an exaggerated representation of the current US administration… or better, a projection in the future if this administration could have their hands free to shape the US and the world the way they think it should look like.
It even suggests thinking about the possibility that 9/11 may be the work of the Bush administration… bold!
I particularly enjoyed the strong reference to Pink Floyd’s “The wall”. The rally held by the High Chancellor, the colours (black and red) the symbols of the party; the crowd… is almost the exact transcription of Pink’s rally in The Wall. The high chancellor’s ideology is highly inspired from the same:
“Are there any queers in the audience tonight?
Get them up against the wall!
There’s one in the spotlight,
he don’t look right to me,
Get him up against the wall!
That one looks Jewish!
And that one’s a coon!
Who let all of this riff-raff into the room?
There’s one smoking a joint,
And another with spots!
If I had my way,
I’d have all of you shot!”
“Would you like to see Britannia rule again my friend? All you need to do is follow the worms,
Would you like to send our colored cousins Home again, my friend?”
V for Vendetta combines Drama, a political plot, a cheesy romance, action, explosions… and a strong political message making it entertaining and deep at the same time… the perfect recipe to make your ideas reach the more people.
“Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. There is an idea, Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bulletproof.
